Possibly the biggest sci-fi film of the year is coming to Netflix soon in a “normal” and a “brutal” version

With Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire, a massive sci-fi production from director Zack Snyder will soon appear on Netflix. In addition to a normal version, there will also be a more brutal version.

What is Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire about? The orphan Kora lives in an idyllic place on the edge of the galaxy until one day the colony is occupied by the ruler Balisarius and his soldiers.

Kora doesn’t let this sit and she sets off on a journey to hire fighters: because she is declaring war on the empire.

The project, with an estimated budget of $166 million, is intended to establish a massive sci-fi franchise that will include not just films, but stories in all formats (via Vanity Fair). Series, books, comics and games are planned.

“An R-rated sci-fi film of this magnitude shouldn’t exist.”

The two parts of the sci-fi epic Rebel Moon are rated PG-13 in the USA, so in Germany the films will probably be released with FSK 12. However, director Zack Snyder planned an additional version for both parts from the beginning: an R-rated version.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director spoke about the different versions and said:

“I’m very proud of the 13+ version, the wider audience version, because I would say it really covers a great, timeless, mythological framework.”

However, he didn’t want to deprive viewers of the more adult version and said: “What we did with the other version is funny and subversive, because a sci-fi film with an age rating of this size shouldn’t exist.”

In addition to more violence, the alternative version also provides even more insights into the film universe with additional scenes. It will last an hour longer than the normal version.

When does Rebel Moon come out on Netflix? From December 22, 2023 you can watch the first part of the sci-fi series on Netflix. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scar Maker, will follow next year on April 19, 2024.

It is not yet known when exactly the R-rated version of the two films will be released.

Fantasy fans can also rejoice. Because not only is there a new season of The Sandman coming to Netflix, but also another series that takes place in the same comic universe:
