Players play through Starfield with just one skill that most people don’t even know

You can approach Starfield in a variety of ways: you can explore planets, test mods or engage with the main story. A player played through this with a skill that many people probably rarely use – or perhaps don’t even have on their radar.

In a video on YouTube, the user “Causal Loop” presents a summary of his run through Starfield. The special thing about it: He played through the main story without firing a weapon himself. However, that wasn’t the only rule he imposed on himself for his run.

“Guns are designed for one purpose: shooting. But ammo is expensive, heavy and it’s not honorable to kill someone who can’t even see your face,” Causal Loop says wryly at the beginning of his video summarizing his experience.

He wonders what would happen if he were a real villain in Starfield, using the gun as a blunt tool to cause total chaos.

All weapons allowed – but no shooting

What were the rules for his run? Causal Loop posted a post on Reddit on November 23rd titled “I played through Starfield using only melee attacks.” There he explains the rules he has set for himself.

We summarize a few of them for you:

  • The only way to damage enemies is to hit them with the weapon.
  • Pistols, rifles, heavy weapons are allowed as long as the weapon is used like a bat instead of pulling the trigger.
  • Environmental damage such as exploding barrels is allowed.
  • Normal ship combat is permitted.
  • Companions are not allowed to do too much damage.
  • he has tried to take companions with him as rarely as possible, but some missions require this.
  • He plays on the normal difficulty level.
  • He writes about the level of difficulty in the article:

Easy and Very Easy would have made the challenge ridiculous, while Hard and Very Hard didn’t actually make it any harder. This just increased the number of times I had to hit enemies as well as the amount of medi packs I had to use.

Since money is incredibly easy to come by, additional use of medi packs wasn’t really a big problem.

Also, playing on a higher difficulty results in more legendary items, so I thought playing normal would be more balanced.

He chose “Bounty Hunters” as his background. At the start of his space adventure in Starfield, he already had points in the skills of flying, target control systems and boost pack training. Boostpack training in particular is one of the most useful skills, as it allows you to use your jetpack directly – which also proves helpful in fights.

As for traits, he chose Universally Educated to get bonus loot, Wanted to deal more damage at low health, and Introverted because he didn’t want to recruit companions.

“Extroverted,” on the other hand, offers players in Starfield dialogues that are so stupid that you can troll NPCs and they will still forgive everything.

“How do you hit a PC with weapons?”

This is how the community reacts: Individual users ask him in the comments on Reddit and YouTube about his statement that ammunition is heavy and expensive. Causal Loop writes that it was ironic. “The joke is to say how stupid melee attacks with firearms are when the ammo is cheap/light.”

Others note that they have spent many hours in Starfield but had no idea that you could perform a melee attack with an equipped firearm. “80 hours in the game. “How do you hit a PC with weapons?” writes a user on Reddit.

Several people praised the video’s entertainment value. User “notfound379” commented on YouTube: “This is honestly the most consistent entertainment I’ve had with this game after I’d already given up on it. They should hire you.”

Another user writes that the video makes him want to buy Starfield. Every game wants to be “Soulslike”, i.e. super difficult, and he doesn’t have the time or patience for that.

Have you already developed your close combat skills in Starfield? Or would you rather try out different firearms? Feel free to leave us a comment.

The skill system is a central and important point in Starfield. However, some aspects of it are criticized by players – so they have developed a mod that is supposed to make leveling more fun again:

Players are improving Starfield’s skill system itself because it annoyed them too much
