Patient started burning during surgery in Stockholm

The operation was performed with a laser and, according to routine, the patient was covered around the face with wet towels.

In a lex Maria report by Karolinska from the end of February, it appears that during the operation the patient’s oxygen level dropped slightly, whereupon the oxygen level was increased. Soon after, something ignites and the patient starts burning around the mouth. The flames could be quickly smothered using the wet towels on the patient’s face.

Despite that, the patient managed to get burns on his cheeks, nose, lip and chin as well as parts of his oral cavity.

Needed long-term IVA care

The incident report states that a plastic surgeon was urgently consulted and that the patient had to be transferred to the intensive care unit and needed long-term care.
