Oppo has just presented the Air Glass 2, connected “assisted” reality glasses. Main characteristic: their design, which could make them pass for classic frames when they are full of technologies…

Connected objects are now an integral part of our daily lives, and connected glasses seem to be, in view of the efforts made by the digital giants, the next targets, particularly in terms of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). ) – but other manufacturers rely on glasses serving as a screen, such as Huawei with its Vision Glass and Lenovo’s Glasses T1. Each seeks to be the first to revolutionize this technology, the principle of which is to display virtual elements via glasses in front of the eyes of their wearer. Some have already taken the risk, such as Google with its Google Glass – whose exorbitant price had discouraged buyers – then his recent prototypee, but also Xiaomi with the Mijia Glasses Camera – currently on pre-order on the Chinese market. Meta also attempted a foray into the sector with Ray-Ban Stories, but the firm had to abandon the project due to financial difficulties. It’s Oppo’s turn to try his luck again! After marketing its Air Glass – but only on the Chinese market – the Chinese manufacturer took advantage of its show dedicated to its technical innovations Inno Day 2022 to present their successors, the Air Glass 2, its new “assisted” reality glasses.

Oppo Air Glass 2: real glasses that are still very mysterious

Oppo had already unveiled during Inno Day 2021 the first version of its Air Glass, the concept of which was based on the addition of a 38-gram monocular module equipped with a microprojector to be installed on classic glasses, and whose information displayed depended on a Bluetooth connection with a smartphone. For the second model, the manufacturer seems to have revised the design and this time offers real classic glasses that can be worn every day, although the branches are a little thick. With a total weight of 38 grams, they are very light – especially when compared to the 100 grams of Xiaomi’s Mijia Glass Camera. And in addition, if we are to believe the visuals, the display this time seems to be on two lenses, and no longer just one. Oppo also claims to want to return its Air Glass 2 “indistinguishable from ordinary glasses”.

Connected glasses will be equipped with “the world’s first SRG-diffractive waveguide lens”, specially developed by the Chinese manufacturer, and they will be adapted to the eyesight of the wearer thanks to corrective lenses – what good are glasses if you can’t see well? Oppo specifies that the Air Glass 2 will have “further customization“, without us knowing exactly what it is. If we can see on the visuals a speaker and a microphone on each branch, we do not know the technical sheet of the device (autonomy, screen , SoC…) The brand claims only Air Glass 2 carry “human-computer interaction” on another level. This is quite intriguing!

In terms of functions, Oppo explains that the Air Glass 2 will be able to make phone calls, perform real-time translations, offer GPS navigation and transcribe voice to text for people – which can be very practical for people with hearing disorders. Possibilities already offered by the first Air Glasses of the name and which, we hope, should be further improved in order to offer a really interesting use. It also remains to be seen whether, as with the previous model, gestures and voice are used to control the device. Oppo also did not specify if its connected glasses would be released outside of China, or at what price.
