The 1974 revenge thriller starring Charles Bronson caused a stir at the time of its theatrical release a controversy beyond compare and was indexed in Germany for a long time. He’s on TV tonight.

A Man Sees Red is the film adaptation of the novel The vigilante or man sees red by Brian Garfield. The story revolves around a simple man named Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) who works in an architect’s office and is liberal in outlook. But that should change soon.

When he comes home from work one day, he is shocked to find that his Raped daughter and murdered his wife became. Though Kersey has previously spoken out against harsh punishments for criminals, he’s now taking the law into his own hands. What begins a bloody revenge campaign.

Although directed by Michael Winner, the film has ambivalent moments, it was perceived as highly problematic at the time. In Germany, A Man Sees Red was even indexed. The film was only taken off the index in 2018 and re-examined by the FSK. Now he is released from 16 years.

The controversy didn’t hurt the film’s success, however. On the contrary: Bronson returned four more times as Paul Kersey from 1982 to 1994. In 2018, Eli Roth will also deliver a remake of the first film, starring none other than Bruce Willis. However, the remake was not a great success.
