However, Starfield has not yet achieved the legendary success of games such as Fallout 3, Skyrim and Oblivion. Fallout: New Vegas, an RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and developed by Bethesda, attracted great attention when it was released for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. This success is even more remarkable considering that Fallout: New Vegas was originally designed as an expansion pack for Fallout 3. However, Chris Avellone, a former writer at Obsidian, confirmed that they presented Bethesda with an offer to make a spin-off of The Elder Scrolls series, inspired by the success of Fallout: New Vegas. Avellone stated that this offer was made to serve as a bridge between Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 and offer additional adventures.

Avellone also added that they wanted to implement a more frequent and unhurried release strategy for The Elder Scrolls series. He emphasized that having a standalone spin-off game of The Elder Scrolls series was an attractive idea, but said it was unfortunate that the idea was never implemented.
