The airline Finnair has started weighing passengers along with their hand luggage in a study aimed at better determining the weight of aircraft before take-off.

The weighing is voluntary and anonymous, and is done on certain flights in February, April and May.

– The measurements started at Helsinki Airport on Monday. So far, over 500 voluntary customers have participated in the weigh-ins, airline spokesperson Kaisa Tikkanen told AFP earlier this week.

In addition to the plane itself, the weight of the plane includes the weight of fuel, luggage, cargo in the hold, meals, water tanks for toilets and passengers, the company writes in a statement.
