New Top Gun 3 update should make fans happy

It was one of the biggest action highlights of recent years: In Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise returned to his 80s cult role as pilot Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion), not only landed in second place among the most successful films of 2022 with box office earnings of over 1.495 billion US dollars. The blockbuster also received exuberant praise from the press, including Rotten Tomatoes recorded a score of 96% positive reviews.

After this mega success, fans had no doubt that the Top Gun series would be expanded with a third part. In January of this year the confirmation finally came, that Top Gun 3 is actually coming and Tom Cruise returns once again as Maverick. Now producer Jerry Bruckheimer commented on the sequel – and should make fans particularly happy with one detail.

Tom Cruise will lead the Top Gun 3 team as Maverick

While Cruise will also see Miles Teller return as Rooster and Glen Powell as Hangman, there have already been speculations that the Mission: Impossible star might take on a minor role in the sequel, paving the way for Powell and Teller’s characters to take center stage. However, as Bruckheimer now revealed to the industry publication Screen Rant, this will not be the case. Instead, should Tom Cruise also stars in Top Gun 3 take over:

Tom Cruise [wird das Team anführen]. Tom is great. We spent a lot of time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski has a wonderful idea and [Tom] said he really liked these, so we’re developing them further.

When is Top Gun 3 coming to theaters?

However, with Tom Cruise in the lead role, there are also some production difficulties, as the actor has to work in the next few years already numerous other commitments, which initially makes filming for the action hit more distant. Jerry Bruckheimer is also aware of this problem, as he made clear in the interview:

But we don’t know when we’ll make the film yet because Tom is so busy. He’s currently filming Mission: Impossible 8 and has another film coming up after that. Hopefully we get a script that excites him and we’ll take to the skies again.

After Mission: Impossible 8, Tom Cruise will also be in front of the camera for the new film from Birdman director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for his deal with Warner Bros. So we have to wait a while until we can expect Top Gun 3 to be in cinemas. A cinema release before 2026 or 2027 is therefore unlikely.
