New employee fell off the garbage truck – was dragged for more than 50 meters

A newly hired cleaning worker fell off the garbage truck and was dragged behind – for 50 meters.
The man broke both legs and ankles, while his skin was scraped off in several places, reports the news agency Siren.

The accident occurred in Karlstad municipality, in October last year. At the time of the accident, the newly hired cleaning worker was riding in the back of the garbage truck and fell off while the vehicle was in motion.

The man got stuck in the bin lift of the garbage truck and was dragged behind for about 50 meters.

The injuries consisted of broken bones in both lower legs and both ankles, as well as skin scrapings at the ankles, the right hip and the right side of the chest, as well as subcutaneous bleeding at the right hip.

Fines of SEK 300,000

The municipal cleaning company where the man was employed is now punished with a corporate fine of SEK 300,000, according to a penalty order from a work environment prosecutor.

“Negligence has consisted of the safety officer failing to inform the new employee
about which safety rules applied to the work for the current type of cleaning vehicle and thereby did not ensure that the new employee had sufficient knowledge of the work and its risks,” writes the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the decision.
