Alexandre Dumas’ adventure novel The Three Musketeers * has been filmed countless times. However, once Martin Bourboulon’s latest adaptation throws us into the action, it’s as if the classic tale is unfolding for the first time. D’Artagnan (François Civil) is on his way to Paris in 1625 to become a noble fighter: a musketeer of the king. With such a hero’s career in mind, it’s already his duty to rush to the aid of a carriage in need. But he is overpowered and then buried. Alive, it turns out. After he has dug his way out of the ground again, he pursues the trail of the perpetrators.

However, the survivor makes three enemies on the very first day of his training, all of whom challenge him individually to a duel: Athos (Vincent Cassel), Porthos (Pio Marmaï) and Aramis (Romain Duris). Only when the three musketeers are drawn into a conspiracy by D’Artagnan that includes France’s king (Louis Garrel) and queen (Vicky Krieps) and the mysterious Milady (Eva Green) do opponents become reluctant allies.

The remake The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan succeeds in this adventure as successful balancing act between fast-paced fights and humorous character drawings to master what, as a tone of voice, made Pirates of the Caribbean perfect entertainment. Even if there is nothing supernatural at work here, swinging swords, cheating and wallowing in landscapes, castles and costumes.

Equally convincing action plan sequences follow in the forest, in the monastery and many more times.

Between horse chases, catchy characters and dramatic plot twists, The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan offers compelling French adventure cinema (co-produced by Germany and Spain) as a fresh adaptation of well-known material. And although the film finds a satisfying conclusion, the Sequel The Three Musketeers: Milady on December 14, 2023 can’t come fast enough.
