MediaMarkt Zorlu Center store opened this morning

MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group COO and MediaMarkt Turkey CEO Yenal Gökyıldırım said, “While the consumer electronics market grew by 40 percent, we achieved more growth than both the market and our competitors. We have achieved this together with our employees, suppliers and consumers. We would like to thank everyone who preferred MediaMarkt and made us feel this pride.”

Expressing that they will increase their share and sales in both the online and physical markets and continue their investments without slowing down in 2022, Gökyıldırım said, “We will do this with our expertise, the strength of our brand, our consumer-oriented approach and our multi-channel strategy.” Gökyıldırım emphasized that they tended to meet all the needs of customers, especially in online shopping where demand exploded during the pandemic, and that they did not give up on physical store investments as well as focusing on the online channel. Gökyıldırım said, “We do not think that our consumers will give up their buying habits by experiencing the product. Therefore, in addition to our online investments, we never stop our store investments. We will continue to open new stores and renew our existing stores. We aim to reach 100 stores in total by the end of 2023. With all this growth, we will create employment opportunities for 500 more people until 2023 within MediaMarkt. In this way, we are happy to make a serious contribution to the youth employment of our country.”

Our store in Zorlu AVM will be our newest experience store

Drawing attention to the importance of experience stores especially in technology shopping, Gökyıldırım underlined their vision on this subject with the occasion of the 88th store they opened in Zorlu AVM. Gökyıldırım continued as follows: “Our stores are the places where we bring our expertise to our consumers, where we showcase our product variety, and where we connect with our consumers with our pre-sales, during and after-sales services. As MediaMarkt, we are working hard to deliver the technology that enters every aspect of our lives to our consumers by offering the best experience through all of our channels, to provide the best service to our customers and to respond to the product they need in the fastest way possible. With our “Making a Difference in Service” model, we always put people in our main focus. We will make a difference in retailing with our ‘expert’ human resources who use technology well and continue to contribute to the sector with our qualified workforce.”

Yenal Gökyıldırım is now responsible for 12 countries

Yenal Gökyıldırım stated that he took the responsibility of 12 countries in total with 3 new countries added this year, “I was responsible for Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal as well as Turkey. Switzerland, Austria and Hungary were added to the countries I managed in 2021. These 12 managed countries represent a total size of more than 10 billion Euros and employment of more than 30 thousand. Within our group, Turkey is one of the top three markets with consistently high customer demand and increasing sales, both in-store and online. This was the case last year as well. We have no doubt that we will be one of the brightest countries of the group with a similar performance this year,” he said.

Emphasizing that they will continue to invest in the online channel, the importance of which has been understood once again in the pandemic, Gökyıldırım said: “Thanks to e-commerce and our multi-channel structure, where all channels are connected to each other with uninterrupted experience quality, we obtain serious data on consumer shopping behaviors. For example, the rate of shopping in stores only decreased by 20 percent during the pandemic. On the other hand, the rate of shopping through multiple channels increased by 200 percent, while the rate of those who shopped online only increased by 308 percent. Now 3 out of 4 customers use more than one channel during their shopping journey. 73% of the trade that passes through our online channels comes from omnichannel. There are many different channels and possibilities, such as buying online and receiving from the store, ordering from the store and sending it to your home online, or purchasing from the call center. We have seen the biggest movement in the multi-channel segment in our customer segment, which goes to online shopping and in-store pickup. Likewise, we continued our growth in both the store and the online channel. Since the beginning of our fiscal year, our total sales have grown by 61% and our digital sales by 47%.”

Stating that they achieved a significant success with their online and offline stores and reached a total number of 228 million visitors, Gökyıldırım said, “We will continue our opportunities designed in line with the needs of our consumers and we will design our campaigns in line with this trend. We will be at every point requested by the consumer. We will continue to be the most preferred consumer electronics brand with our expert and reliable brand discourse.”

Sustainability is one of our main focuses

Yenal Gökyıldırım stated that as Europe’s number one electronics retailer by far, sustainability is one of their main focuses: “We are aware of our responsibilities for society and the environment. With MediaMarkt, we carry out our sustainability strategy, which we call ‘better’, under two main headings: Environmental Sustainability and Creating a Sustainable Business Model.

Pointing out that they will significantly reduce their CO2 footprint by using electricity obtained from renewable energies everywhere in MediaMarkt, starting from 2023, within the framework of the decision taken by Ceconomy, their umbrella company on Environmental Sustainability, Gökyıldırım said that they will reduce their packaging waste to a large extent and they will be involved in the circular economy with more and more products. Gökyıldırım continued as follows: “Our main focus in creating a sustainable business model is to be a preferred workplace for women, to support the career development of female employees and to transform diversity into a culture. In the light of this vision, with the Story of the Woman, the Story of Tomorrow project, which we have implemented; Our Sales Team Leader rate increased from 20 percent to 29 percent, our Customer Experience Manager rate increased from 13 to 33 percent, and our rate of recruitment in Sales departments increased from 29 percent to 36 percent. Today, the rate of women in CVs sent to us is higher than that of men. In general, we are above the Turkey average in terms of female employment. Our target in the number of female employees this year is 40 percent. Moreover, we plan to increase this rate to 50 percent in the next 4 years. These works include both our General Directorate and all our stores across the country. Therefore, as MediaMarkt, we are waiting for applications to all our open postings, regardless of position difference.”
