Lava lakes seen by Olivier Grunewald

Windows open towards the center of the Earththe lakes of wash are fascinating phenomena. Often located at the bottom of deep craters, their dynamism is hypnotic. The regular arrival of bubbles of gas bursting their surface alternates periods of calm with moments when their entire surface is activated, a real outburst.

There are only a few permanent lava lakes in the world, such as Erta Alé in Ethiopia, Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Halemaumau in Hawaii. Other lakes, just as impressive, are intermittent, like that of Marum, in theArchipelago of Vanuatu.

He’s the volcanologist Haroun Tazieff who was the first to descend into the crater of volcano Nyiragongo, revealing the fabulous spectacle it contained. Since then, studies have multiplied in an attempt to understand the functioning of the flows ofenergy and the movements of convection who drive them. The photograph Olivier Grunewald invites us to discover some of the most beautiful of these turbulent environments on planet Earth.
