last day of campaigning before crucial legislative elections

This Friday, October 13, 2023 is the last day of the electoral campaign for the Polish legislative vote which will be held on Sunday, October 15. More than 30 million Polish voters are called to the polls for elections that could allow the Law and Justice party (PiS) to retain power.

This end of the electoral campaign demonstrates to what extent the country is divided. On the one hand, there are voters who support the outgoing government and its increasingly conservative and nationalist policies, voters who do not hesitate to denounce the European Union, responsible according to them for inflation and poor economic situation in Poland. And on the other side, voters who expect in-depth changes, a more liberal policy, less focused on the traditional values conveyed by the party in power, the worse, the law and justice party.

Polarization of Polish society

We are therefore witnessing an even greater polarization of Polish society, a polarization to which the media, and in particular the public media, have greatly contributed.

The campaign ends this evening, notably with the last electoral meetings. The two main groups will hold meetings. These are therefore the PiS led by Jaroslav Kaczynski and the KO, the civic coalition led by Donald Tusk, the former Prime Minister and former President of the European Council.

But other parties decided not to hold meetings, but rather to continue to travel the country. This is particularly the case of Konfederacja, the far-right party which aims to become the third political force in this election. This is therefore the final stretch to try to convince undecided voters, knowing that this evening at midnight, electoral silence will be imposed after a campaign which did not excite the Poles.
