Lung cancer, which is very common, ranks high in cancer-related deaths. Harmful lifestyle habits such as smoking increase the risk of cancer. Being aware of the symptoms of cancer and being able to detect it early is vital. One of the symptoms of lung cancer is finger sticking. Experts state that you can detect finger clubbing with a nail test at home.

DIAMOND TEST APPLICATION

Known as the “diamond gap” finger test or Schamroth window test, this method aims to detect lung cancer early. The finger test involves a person pulling their fingernails together to check for a diamond-shaped space between the cuticles. Clubbing of the finger occurs with the gradual swelling of the fingertips. The first thing that occurs is the softening of the base of the nail and the shine of the skin next to the nail bed. Then the nails begin to curl more than usual, which is visible when viewed from the side. Finally, the tips of the fingers grow and begin to swell. The last stage is thought to occur due to the collection of fluid in the soft tissues of the fingers.

“Although not having this diamond-shaped window does not automatically indicate lung cancer, it can be a symptom,” says the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

How is it done?

  • Join the nails of your index fingers.
  • Next, look for a small diamond-shaped gap between your cuticles where the light comes through.
  • The tips of the fingers may be larger than normal, and the nails may be curved.
  • If there is no gap and the nail beds are touching, this is a sign of finger clubbing.
