I don’t discuss that with a Nobel laureate

It will be the 51st time that King Carl XVI Gustaf hands out the Nobel Prize. In Nyhetsmorgon, the king and queen talk about the importance of research and what they actually talk about at the banquet.
– Here the elite of researchers from around the world gather and you have the opportunity to award a prize in the various disciplines. It means a lot for Sweden but also for research as such, says King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The king speaks warmly of basic research – what he calls the foundation of the building.

– If you were to build a house without a foundation, it will collapse. Basic research is the most important thing there is, but it is also difficult and costs an infinite amount of money. Universities around the world work with questions that you don’t always know what to use them for.

He highlights some of the award-winning foundations that have since become useful things, such as the LED light, lithium batteries and the mRNA vaccine.

Does not always go into the research

The royal family sits at the banquet table with the Nobel laureates and also holds a dinner at the castle. But it is not always about research in particular, says the king.

– You don’t dive in and discuss their research results. There is so much else around that you can discuss, spontaneous discussions. The second I think I will leave to those who know these prices and research results, says the king.

Although both the king and the queen get a review of the prize winners’ discoveries and works.

– We go through the prices here at the castle so that you get a basis of what it all entails, but I will not stand here and discuss what it all applies to because it is complicated and I think you have to take a little longer to set get into.

“You talk about personal issues”

Queen Silvia says that the topics of conversation also end up in the personal.

– They often want to know about Sweden as a country, you talk about family, you talk about Sweden and the personal. It’s nice, interesting and exciting, says Queen Silvia.

The king hopes that the Nobel laureates will feel welcome.

– One also hopes that they feel that they are well taken care of in Sweden and that there is a science base in Sweden that can receive them in the right way, and I think it does. This is why universities and research are so important.
