Helldivers 2 CEO speaks out about PSN coercion

It was recently announced that a PSN account will soon be required to play Helldivers 2. Now the CEO of the development studio speaks out.

The development studio behind Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios, recently announced that a PSN account will be required to play the game in the future. This requirement is also implemented for players who play the game exclusively on Steam.

After the community reacted accordingly and punished the game with thousands of negative reviews on Steam, the studio’s CEO has now spoken out. However, deviating from the plan does not seem to be on the agenda.

Regain trust

What does the CEO say? The CEO of the development studio, Johan Pilestedt, spoke out in a post on X. Here he addresses the negative reviews and says that he believes they are justified. He apologizes for this development and hopes they can make amends and regain trust.

He continues to say that he just wants to make great games. There is no reference to the deletion of the idea regarding the PSN requirement in this article.

Ouch, right in the review score 😢🤕

Well, I guess it’s warranted. Sorry everyone for how this all transpired. I hope we will make it up and regain the trust by providing a continued great game experience.

Community sees blame on the publisher

What does the community say about this? The community sees Sony as being to blame for the PSN requirement. While Arrowhead Game Studios is responsible for developing the game, Sony is acting as publisher for Helldivers 2.

Some of the comments from the community are:

  • Caught Sony changing its own words, writes a commenter in his post on Reddit
  • The best thing would be to convince Sony to reverse this decision. Good luck with that :/ reads a comment on Reddit
  • I truly feel sorry for the developers of Arrowhead. The love and effort is evident everywhere, and listening to them in interviews, it’s clear how much they cared about just making a damn good game, writes another player on Reddit
  • I just want Arrowhead to continue to be a shining example of “not crap” in the gaming scene. It’s annoying that Sony sees this idea as a problem for some reason, says another commenter on Reddit
  • Oh, I’m sure Arrowhead has no control over the situation. I feel sorry for her, reads another comment on Reddit
  • It remains to be seen whether and in what form Sony will respond to the community’s feedback and whether the PSN requirement will change.
