In SVT’s program “30 minutes”, Ulf Kristersson is asked about NATO, the climate and the euro.

When it comes to the presidential candidates in the United States, he can’t pick a favorite.

– I do not think that Sweden as a country or government should take a position, says the prime minister.

In tonight’s episode of SVT’s “30 minutes” Kristersson is asked which of the two presidential candidates in the United States would be best for Europe’s security.

But he replies that he does not want to take a position on the matter.

While he does not want to choose a candidate, he says that Trump’s rhetoric weakens the link between the EU and the US.

– I think it is much better with an American policy that stands up for transatlantic cooperation, that respects the institutions and that trusts that legitimate election authorities count the election results correctly.

In a high-profile statement, Donald Trump said that NATO countries that do not pay enough will not be defended by the United States. He also added that “Russia can do whatever the hell they want with them”.

A statement that Kristersson distances himself from. But he is nevertheless restrained. And says that from the Swedish side there is no position in the American domestic debate.

At the same time that Kristersson points out that the government does not think like Donald Trump, he highlights that he had a good collaboration with President Joe Biden.

– We have cooperated extremely well with President Joe Biden and his foreign minister, says Kristersson in the program.

“Enormous opportunities to strengthen ourselves”

He points out that the cooperation between Sweden and other NATO countries is important now after Sweden’s entry into NATO – and that the cooperation has great potential.

– Strongly equip Europe’s defenses and cooperate even more closely. An obvious example is that now that Sweden and the entire Nordic region and all the Baltic states are members of NATO, the Nordic-Baltic defense cooperation can become limitlessly strong. There we have enormous opportunities to strengthen ourselves, says Kristersson.
