A new SVT documentary called “Gunde Svan – The Skier” has been released.
There, the icon breaks down completely – when he reveals how his son Ferry got his name.
Gunde Svan is one of Sweden’s greatest athletes of all time, and one of our top skiers. He completely dominated in both the WC and the Olympics, revolutionizing skiing with his material choices, his accuracy and his winning skull. And much could be thanked for Ferdinand Grill.
Totally falling apart
On Wednesday, the first part of a new SVT documentary called “Gunde Svan – Skidåkaren” was released, which goes through Gunde’s legendary career, and what was behind the great success. But at one point it becomes too difficult for Gunde, and it concerns Ferdinand Grill in particular.
It was Grill who recruited Svan to the ski brand he worked for, and that was just the beginning of something very big. It didn’t take long for Svan to realize what a good serviceman Grill was, and he therefore asked him to start working as his personal serviceman. In the documentary, Gunde Svan will try to put into words how much Ferdinand Grill meant to him, but it will be too difficult.
“I think you understand…”
Gunde Svan begins by saying that Grill “learned me before without”‚ but then he can’t get any more words out. Instead, Gunde Svan bursts into tears. In the end, he also says: “I think you understand anyway that this is why I have a son called Ferry”.
Because Ferdinand Grill went by the nickname Ferry, and that was why, as a pure homage, Gunde named his son after his name.
And not only that, Ferdinand Grill, who also takes part in the documentary, is also Ferry’s godfather.
The documentary also reveals how Gunde lured Grill into a serious gold investment before the 1991 WC – by offering a huge financial bonus in case of a possible gold.
