FS Group, CEO Luigi Ferraris: “10% of Italian photovoltaics from our sources”

FS Ferraris more and more self produced energy

(Finance) – “The power of the FS Group’s energy self-production plants will reach 2 Gigawatts and will increase the total of photovoltaic systems installed today in Italy by about 10%. Already in 2024, with the first activations, the power will reach 300 MW “so theCEO of the FS Group Luigi Ferraris in the Camogli Communication Festival in which he took part.

As we read on Fs News, the information portal of the Ferrovie dello Stato GroupCEO Ferraris returns to address the issue of the moment, that of energy crisis, outlining the Group’s role in decreasing the country’s dependence on foreign sources, in contributing to the success of the PNIEC (National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan) and, therefore, to the energy and ecological transition. Goals to achieve which also contributes to the growth of the collective, integrated and sustainable mobility offer, on which the new Industrial Plan of the FS Group.

Interviewed by Ferruccio De Bortoli, Ferraris recalled how attention to the energy issue precedes the current crisis. It was of primary importance, since the FS Group consumes 2% of the country’s total demand, identify sources of self-production and become more autonomous: “There is a plan of investments of over 1.6 billion which will allow us to produce energy from renewable sources – mainly photovoltaic and wind power – capable of satisfying at least 40% of our needs “, he said. Another line of action will concern energy efficiency with short and medium-term interventions:” They range from the contribution offered by the progressive renewal of the train fleet – the new generation ones consume 30% less than the previous ones – to the introduction of intelligent driving systems for passenger and freight transport – continued Luigi Ferraris – up to measures of smart building for industrial plants and stations “.

Returning to the topic of production, the number one of Ferrovie explained: “We have planned a pipeline of two thousand megawatts of photovoltaic and small wind plants to be activated mainly in areas no longer functional to our core activities, and close to our infrastructures. The processes necessary for the construction of these plants – he specified – have already been started and the first realizations and activations will start from 2023, starting with a first group of plants capable of delivering, overall, by 2024, a power of about 300MW , at the service of RFI’s electrical substations, railway stations, and the industrial sites of Trenitalia and Mercitalia. “This and other measures will contribute to achieving another challenging objective: achieving carbon neutrality in 2040, 10 years ahead of the table of European march which foresees the target of “zero emissions” by 2050.

Regarding the projects financed by the PNRRLuigi Ferraris underlined how much these form part of an even broader strategy outlined in the FS Group’s ten-year Business Plan, which translates into a overall commitment of over 190 billion in investments. “Among the objectives is the growth of an overall capacity of the railway network by at least 20%, also with the extension of cutting-edge technologies such as ERTMS, to make the lines less saturated”, continued the CEO. by FS Luigi Ferraris. “It should not be forgotten that we have infrastructures with an average age that exceeds 70 years, which require continuous maintenance and show, in some cases, saturation levels that compromise regularity and punctuality of the services”.
