This winter, the Tour de Ski is the big highlight for all cross-country skiers in the world’s elite. There are no WC or Olympics this season, but already now skiers and those interested are starting to talk about next year’s big ski festival in Trondheim, when Norway will host the WC.
Rumors of a comeback
And there has already been a lot of talk about a return for one of the sport’s greatest ever. After the last Olympics, where there was total slaughter of Therese Johaug, the Norwegian superstar chose to end her career. Johaug has recently become a mother, and during the autumn many have speculated about a possible comeback for the star, with a clear focus on the WC on home soil.
According to several in the industry, Johaug must be in good shape as she still trains a lot and hard. Before Christmas, there were World Cup competitions in Trondheim itself, in something that was nicknamed “pre-World Cup”, considering that it was on the same tracks as the World Cup next year. And in connection with the competitions, Frida Karlsson met Therese Johaug, who is now an expert in Norwegian NRK.
Reveals the private conversation
And then Johaug said something to Karlsson that made the Swedish star even more certain that a comeback is imminent.
– I spoke very briefly with her. She said she “misses this so much” once she was back in a competition arena. It smells like a comeback, says Karlsson to the Norwegian Nettavisen.
Karlsson says that she had liked a lot about a Johaug comeback, but that she is not completely sure of a given success. She believes that cross-country skiing has taken big steps forward since Johaug’s departure.
– It is clearly triggering, but I am not alone in wanting to challenge her. It feels as if the level at the top has been raised. And that there has been a greater width at the top, she says.
