Frida Karlsson and Ebba Andersson fight back against Gunde Svan and Thomas Wassberg’s major criticism: “Going out of control”

Gunde Svan and Thomas Wassberg have directed clear criticism at today’s skiers.
Now Frida Karlsson and Ebba Andersson strike back against the icons.
– Then it must have gotten out of hand, Ebba tells Expressen.

SVT’s new documentary about the legendary skier Gunde Swan has made big headlines. Where both Svan and his national team colleague Thomas Wassberg directs clear criticism at today’s cross-country skiers.

Swan & Wassberg

The icons say that a large part of their success comes from being their own coaches on the slopes.
– It was drummed into the first day in Torsby (skiing high school): “On the paper it says that we are your coaches, but it is you who will become your own coaches,” says Gunde in the TV documentary.
– I can be surprised by that today, that it is so much controlled by what another coach set up that you should train.

Today, the Swedish national team skaters have personal trainers on both the men’s and women’s side. Which is not at all appreciated by the older guard of ski heroes.
– I really don’t like the situation as it is today, that they should have a coach who rules like this. They have to learn to know their own body and you must have learned that in high school, says Wassberg in the documentary.

Andersson & Karlsson

Now the Swedish skiing stars are striking Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson back. Ebba is trained by her father Per-Ola Andersson but still feels that she can decide a lot about her training.
– I am absolutely very involved in my setup. After all, it is ultimately me who will implement it. But I play a lot with my dad, who also manages sometimes. Because if I was in charge all the time, then it would probably have gotten out of hand, Andersson tells Expressen and responds to the icons’ criticism.
– No, they certainly have a point. Not everything has to be black or white.

While Frida has collaborated with the personal trainer Per Nilsson for many years. Here, too, Karlsson has a lot of power over his own development as a skier.
– I am in charge of my own training, but of course play a lot with Per. I am very, very involved and go a lot on feeling, she says to the evening newspaper.
– I know that many people want a coach who controls everything. This can be the case in other national teams, where a head coach sets everything up. But I don’t do that.
