There is a fire in a waste facility in an industrial area in Jordbro in Haninge municipality, south of Stockholm, reports P4 Stockholm. The development of smoke is so strong that the emergency services have issued a so-called VMA – important message to the public.

Everyone living in the area is asked to go indoors and close doors and windows.

– There is no risk of spread, but on the other hand there is a blanket of smoke over Jordbro. That’s why we chose to issue a VMA, says Sebastian Levin, duty officer at Södertörn’s fire brigade association.

According to Levin, it burns in a larger pile of waste with an area of about 20 by 20 meters.

– It is mixed waste, so it can be a bit of anything, plastic, wood and construction waste. It’s obviously dangerous smoke, but it’s not chemicals.

The alarm came in at around 04.30. The emergency services expect to remain at the scene until ten o’clock.
