Final Fantasy XIV Boss Considers Leveling Down

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Final Fantasy XIV developers are considering a level squish. Boss Naoki Yoshida asks the players what they think about it.

Currently 90 is the maximum level in FFXIV, with the upcoming 2024 expansion it should probably go to 100. It is therefore difficult for new players to catch up by then.

In a patch 6.3 livestream, director Naoki Yoshida spoke about Square Enix considering scaling the levels in the MMORPG differently – through a level squish.

What does that mean? A level squish would mean levels are literally squished together. The maximum level would then be adjusted from 100 to 60, for example, and the stats and skills would be scaled down. Something similar already existed in WoW Shadowlands.

Players want faster playable jobs

There are these reactions: After Yoshida voiced the idea and asked his community about it, players promptly created a reddit thread to discuss it.

“The level is just a number,” writes one user. However, it is more important to rework the jobs and make them playable faster. “Jobs aren’t fun to play fast enough,” explains another fan on reddit. So the Dragoon only gets its 2nd AoE attack at level 62, before that it doesn’t feel like a full rotation.

This is also the case with other jobs. The fans in the reddit thread therefore want all jobs to get their full rotation earlier – some want them from level 60, others from 30. The developers could tackle the problem within the level squish.

We summarize a few more comments for you here:

  • sneakypuddle: “The only change you need to make is to give jobs a rotation from level 60 onwards. The level will overtake the content anyway.”
  • chili01: “Or a basic rotation at level 50. I can’t believe the 2nd AoE attack on the Dragoon is so late.”
  • Sinolai: “I don’t think the squish would be the same in FFXIV as it was in WoW. It’s all unlocked through the main story anyway.”
  • raur0s: “You definitely have to think about the experience as a new player. It’s years away, but telling someone they have to play 100s of hours to get the content to level 100+ is pretty overwhelming for new players, no matter how great the story is.”

So this is a problem: As in many other RPGs, the skills of the jobs in FFXIV are gradually unlocked as the level increases. This limited set of skills is now spread over 90 levels.

As a result, some jobs receive their most important attacks and spells, which are crucial for the rotation and the fun of the game, extremely late. This can make gameplay feel sluggish and not fun at low levels.

Therefore, in the reddit thread, players suggest addressing this issue in case of a level squish.

So FFXIV players seem to care less about the level their character is at. Instead, they want to be able to play different jobs correctly faster. The fact that they could lose levels doesn’t seem to bother anyone as long as the developers think about desired job adjustments.
