After Ryan Gosling was recently able to prove his comedy presence in Barbie, Amazon Prime * sees fit to release his ingenious detective action crime thriller The Nice Guys to be included in the program. Which we can only welcome. Because the darkly humorous film by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) shows how well Gosling and Russell Crowe can entertain as a duo.

The titular “nice guys” from The Nice Guys are two very different private detectives, who work in Los Angeles in 1977: Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is the one you call when you need the man for the rough, who, in addition to sniffing, can also convey his messages with his fist. Single father Holland March (Ryan Gosling), on the other hand, tries to make ends meet with less shady tactics. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe harmonize as involuntary buddy pair with unbeatable chemistry. Although “unbeatable” is perhaps the wrong word when the film is about the two of them the whole time “merciless as a few [menschliche] pinatas” treated as Consequence so aptly described.
Between the brief violent escapades, the funny dialogues and the successful interaction, the conspiracy to be uncovered seems almost secondary. But that’s totally fine when Shane Black’s action crime thriller is otherwise so much fun and transports us back to a bygone era of 70s Hollywood. Will we ever get The Nice Guys 2?
Although The Nice Guys now has cult status among many fans and director Shane Black was very fond of the idea of a sequel in the past, a sequel has never materialized. Russell Crowe revealed to KFC Radio that he and Ryan Gosling were still interested, but how seriously his statements should be taken remains questionable:
We already came up with a title that made us laugh. I’ll test it on you to see if it still works: If we ever make a second film, we want him ‘The Nice Guys: The Mexican Detectives’ to name. Bang! Me and Ryan have to pretend we’re Mexican private investigators for some reason.
In 2017 there were also plans to create a female reboot of The Nice Guys. But there hasn’t been any news about this for a while now. The chances of seeing the quick-witted private snoops again are currently slim.
