Experts warn of GTA Online on PC: log in at your own risk

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Cheaters, modders, hackers – in the PC version of the action game GTA Online, such nasty characters are the order of the day. But now the problem has reached a new level and there are even warnings against going into the game at all. MeinMMO shows you the details.

GTA 5 is a phenomenon, an anomaly in the gaming market. The action game has been selling brilliantly for years and although the game and the online mode will soon be 10 years old, the last 30 days have seen a maximum of 180,000 simultaneous players – on Steam alone (via steamcharts.com).

That’s absolutely impressive. Also with regard to the fact that, especially on the PC, there have always been major problems with cheaters or modders that influence the online experience.

However, a point has now been reached where the problem appears to be rampant. GTA expert Tez issued a warning on Twitter and recommends that all PC players only start GTA Online with appropriate protection. Or preferably not at all.

The console version is spared the current problems. Here you can continue to play the latest update “Drug Wars” safely:

“Avoid playing with no firewall rules or at all”

What is the problem? Cheaters can now change the data of your account. You don’t even have to be in your lobby for this. You can change your rank, balance, cars and gadgets. Even a ban or a complete deletion are possible.

In short: you have access to everything. You can read Tez’s warning on Twitter here:

Tez is considered one of the greatest GTA Online experts in the community. He also dealt a lot with the technology in the background. His word carries weight and he doesn’t even utter such a warning.

The expert writes that the current possibilities of modders could even damage your PC.

If you still want to gamble on the PC GTA Online, then you should set up a “Firewall Rule”. You can set up solo sessions and even invite friends. However, it is quite complicated to set up and mistakes can leave your PC vulnerable.

You can also find English instructions for setting up a firewall rule on Twitter. Tez recommends the following approach:

Be really careful with this though, and if you find that setting it up might be too difficult for you, stay away from GTA Online for the foreseeable future.

The latest reports paint a bleak picture of the current state of the PC version. In fact, the problems did not come as a complete surprise. In October 2022, dataminers reported the discovery that GTA Online just disabled 95% of the anti-cheat system.

Players may now be feeling the consequences of the decision, which was classified as “strange” back then. Tez is currently writing on Twitter that the developers are likely to be working flat out on a solution. Developer Rockstar has not yet commented on the official channels.
