Ex Machina director returns with arguably one of the biggest

Alex Garland became famous as an author in the 1990s with The Beach. He is now also a filmmaker, especially in science fiction. Garland has written films such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and Dredd. With Ex Machina, he delivered an extremely impressive directorial debut in 2015.

Most recently, he turned our heads with films like Annihilation and Men as well as the acclaimed series Devs, in which daring sci-fi ideas meet mysterious events. Now Garland is taking another look into the future. And it’s a very disturbing one, as the first poster for the dystopian-tinged Civil War shows.

Snipers on the Statue of Liberty: Sci-fi genius Alex Garland unleashes a civil war in the USA

Not much is known about the plot of Civil War. As World of Reel reports, the name of the film says it all: The USA is on the verge of civil war. The poster makes it clear that the situation is serious. Two snipers have barricaded themselves behind sandbags on the torch of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Civil War

Civil War doesn’t just have an exciting premise. The cast is also worth a look. Here you can find names like Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man), Wagner Moura (Narcos), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon), Jojo T. Gibbs (Past Lives) and Karl Glusman (Love). Joining them is Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), who is also leading the new Alien film (Alien: Romulus) next year.

Sci-Fi highlight 2024: When does Civil War start in cinemas?

The specific theatrical release of Civil War has not yet been determined. However, the poster limits the publication period. In the Spring 2024 Garland’s new film will hit the big screen, at least in the USA. We hope we don’t have to wait much longer in Germany. The trailer for Civil War will be released next week.
