Even Jake Gyllenhaal loses his memory in this packed action

Guy Ritchie fans can’t keep up with watching. At the beginning of January, his last film, Operation Fortune, started with us when the director’s next blockbuster was already announced. With Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, the maker of cult thriller comedies seems to have one consistently serious war film about an emotional rescue mission in Afghanistan turned.

Now look at that first trailer starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Vikings’ Alexander Ludwig and Homelander actor Antony Starr.

The Covenant – Trailer (English) HD

The new Guy Ritchie film is rather atypical for the director

In the story of The Covenant, Gyllenhaal plays Sergeant John Kinley, who is on his final assignment in Afghanistan. When he is injured in the head, his native translator Ahmed (Dar Salim) saves his life. After that, he suffers from amnesia and can only remember Ahmed. When the lives of the translator and his family are in danger, Kinley embarks on a rescue mission and returns to Afghanistan.

With films like Snatch – Pigs and Diamonds, The Gentlemen or most recently Operation Fortune Guy Ritchie usually stands for shallow genre entertainment. The Covenant now looks like a movie more in line with Ritchie’s tone for Cash Truck with Jason Statham and lacking in humor.

The Covenant opens in US cinemas on April 21, 2023. A German start date is yet unknown.
