Erdogan: IS leader killed

— The suspected leader of IS, with the code name Abu al-Hussein al-Qurashi, was neutralized in an operation carried out by the MIT in Syria during yesterday, Erdogan said on Turkish television late on Sunday.

The information has not been confirmed by other independent sources.

Abu al-Hussein al-Qurashi was named the new leader in November after his predecessor in the post, Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, was killed.

IS’s original leader and founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed by US forces in the fall of 2019.

Information about the named leaders of the terrorist network is difficult to verify, and the information is sometimes misleading or outright wrong.

IS is today a fragment of the “caliphate” that was declared in 2014 over parts of Syria and Iraq. However, the organization is still capable of carrying out lethal attacks.
