Electricity debt is increasing among households: “Clearly worried”

It comes like a letter in the mail. The alarm about more and more unpaid electricity bills, which the electricity companies must by law not only send to affected subscribers but also to the municipalities’ social services.

The municipality in turn sends out letters to those concerned, who are therefore not people who regularly receive financial assistance, and asks them to contact their electricity company.

In Gothenburg alone, the number of alarms about unpaid electricity bills has increased by 36 percent.

– Of course, it is worrying that we see it increasing. It is a signal that you are worse off with money, and especially if you have previously had tight margins, says Jörgen Larzon, head of department at the social administration in the city of Gothenburg.

As TV4Nyheterna reported on Thursday, the largest companies do not yet see a significant increase in the total number of customers who want a deferral or split their payment. But it may be a matter of time.
