Elderly man arrested after large seizure of weapons and ammunition in Malmö

It was around 5 pm on Wednesday that the emergency services and police were alerted to a suspicious fire in an apartment.

The emergency services were able to quickly leave the scene, but the police searched the apartment and associated spaces and then found, among other things, several weapons.

– At this point, we don’t want to say how big the seizure is, says Nils Norling, press spokesperson for the Malmö Police.

Suspected of several crimes

The man is now suspected of particularly serious weapons offences, preparation for public destruction and breach of the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods.

A laser pointer was also found in the apartment, and the man is also suspected of violating the Radiation Protection Act.

The police do not want to say more about the man at the moment and they are investigating whether the case is connected to organized crime.

– We are early in the investigation and cannot rule anything out, but as the situation is now there are no such suspicions, says Nils Norling.

No residents had to be evacuated

After the police were ready at the scene, they contacted the National Bomb Squad. No one had to be evacuated and those who live in the apartment building are deemed to be able to stay in their apartments.

On Thursday, the police will continue to empty the apartment of the seizure and carry out a technical examination.
