According to the news in the US-based The New York Times, the US Coast Guard said in a statement early on Tuesday that a ship crashed into a bridge passing through the port of Baltimore. The accident, which occurred on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, was confirmed by Matthew West, a petty officer first class with the Coast Guard in Baltimore.
MANY VEHICLES FALLED INTO THE WATER
While a part of the approximately 2.57 kilometer long bridge collapsed as a result of the impact, many vehicles on the bridge fell into the water during the impact. Authorities stated that search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts to rescue at least 7 people who are believed to have fallen into the water.
While the extent of damage to the bridge, which is part of Interstate 695, is not immediately clear, neither Baltimore Police nor the Maryland Port Authority responded to requests for comment. Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott’s office also declined to comment on the incident.
SINGAPORE FLAGED CARGO SHIP
Coast Guard official Matthew West said the Singapore-flagged cargo ship Dali crashed into the bridge that is part of Interstate 695. He said Dali was 348 meters tall.
