From Monday April 15, 2024, vulnerable people are invited to receive a new injection of the Covid-19 vaccine. It aims to prolong their immune protection. Find out who is affected.

The Ministry of Health announced Tuesday February 27: from April 15, people aged 80 and over, nursing home residents and immunocompromised people of all ages will be offered a new dose of vaccine against Covid. . This will complement the last injection recommended last fall by the High Authority of Health (HAS) to a wider audience: those over 65 and people with comorbidities.

Guarantee the protection of the most vulnerable

Why a new dose so close to the last one? The stated objective is to maintain vaccine effectiveness which seems to decline over time. Indeed, according to a notice from the HAS published at the beginning of February, “immune protection (of the most fragile) decreases more quickly over time as well as for any person at very high risk according to each individual medical situation”.

Seen the “unpredictability of a new epidemic wave of Covid-19 and the emergence of new, more virulent variants likely to lead to a decline in immunity against severe forms and death. the HAS had advised not to rule out a vaccination campaign “earlier or wider” if necessary.

An expected decision for Dr Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo concerning the most vulnerable populations.

“The new booster injection of the covid-19 vaccine is recommended for the most vulnerable, which is logical and reasonable. It is imperative that everyone speaks to their doctor for targeted vaccination and based on their history and weaknesses.”

    Can you also get vaccinated?

If the upcoming campaign targets certain categories of people, vaccination also remains free and accessible to all. Vaccination against covid can be done in pharmacies, with your doctor or with a nurse at home.

The serums used during this campaign are the messenger RNA from Pfizer and BioNTech laboratories or the recombinant protein vaccine, produced by Novavax. The only condition for receiving this new dose is based on your history: you must not have been vaccinated or infected with covid during the last three months.
