Course helps residents deal with grievance

When Sheryll Brimley faced physical and emotional burnout 18 months after the death of her husband, Bill, she turned to the GriefShare course at a local church for help and support.

“For the first time in my life I was alone” she says of her situation. Her cardiologist diagnosed her problem as “unresolved complicated grievance as well as PTSD” and suggested GriefShare, a 13-week grievance recovery course being offered this month at Celebration Church in Brantford.

Brimley found the course offered practical tips for working through grievance, supportive and empathetic leaders and a non-judgmental attitude on the part of the other participants. In fact, “the other members of the GriefShare group became good friends,” she says.

“Quite often people feel alone and isolated as they work through their grievance,” says Don Bernard, Congregational Care Pastor at Celebration Church. “The emotional pain and isolation can be a huge roadblock to finding a new normal in life.”

GriefShare gives people permission and encourages them to work through their grievance, he says.

“Finding support and hope in a small group setting can be a life saver for those going through grievance,” he says. “Not only that, but participants are given practical help for working through their grievance. It is an all-round positive experience for those who take part.”

The GriefShare course is a proven program for helping people work through their grievance. Although it originated in North America, it is used around the world.
