In October 2022, Imam Suhayb Salam was prosecuted by the OM for making a false statement (perjury), money laundering and forgery. The false statement is said to have been delivered to the parliamentary inquiry committee that previously investigated undesirable influence on mosques by regimes in unfree countries. Imam Salam said the persecution is part of a government smear campaign.
