Chief of Police Mats Löfving found dead in his home

Police Chief Mats Löfving was found dead in his residence in central Norrköping on Wednesday evening, the police announced.

– It is with great sadness and consternation that I received the news that Deputy National Police Chief and Regional Police Chief Mats Löfving has passed away. It is extremely tragic, says national police chief Anders Thornberg in a press release.

Earlier today, the investigation was presented which showed that Löfving was involved in several decisions regarding the appointment of Linda Staaf as head of intelligence at Noa in 2015. The investigator Runar Viksten also believed that the national police chief should consider removing Mats Löfving from his position.

Provides support to relatives

It was around 19:00 in the evening that the police, via SOS, were alerted to the address about an injured person inside. Mats Löfving was found dead in the home. The police state that they have opened a death investigation to clarify what happened

Next of kin are notified.

– My thoughts go out to Mats Löfving, his relatives and work colleagues. We will do everything we can to support them in this difficult time, says Anders Thornberg.

Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer gave a written comment to TV4 Nyheterna after Löfving’s death:

“It is with sadness that I have received the tragic news that Stockholm’s regional police chief Mats Löfving has passed away. My thoughts go out to his family and colleagues.”
