Films without a franchise connection have a hard time in the cinema, especially when the latest Avatar film sucks attention away. Even stars like Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie are not enough as a lure. This shows the financial performance of La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s Hollywood orgy Babylon.

Because while Robbie and Pitt’s last film together, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, still raked in hundreds of millions of dollars, their new work is likely to have problems with the 20 million mark.

Here’s how the Tarantino reunion Babylon fared at the box office

Babylon has just one of the worst opening weekends ever laid down. The film grossed just $3.6 million in North America between Friday and Sunday, which is shocking for a number of reasons. Firstly because it cost around 80 million and secondly because it was shown in over 3000 movie theaters in the USA.

It might be argued that snowstorms raged across the States over the weekend, but even the similarly budgeted Puss in Boots: The Last Wish lured enough people out in the cold to rake in $12.4 million (via Box Office Mojo). On the other hand, this animated family film received far better reviews than Babylon and should appeal to holiday audiences better than a Hollywood epic about coking silent movie stars.

This ranks Babylon as the 6th worst opening weekend ever for films that opened in more than 3,000 theaters nationwide (via Reddit). According to Box Office Mojo, #1 goes to Hugh Jackman’s Reminiscence.

Over the long weekend, including Monday, Babylon made $5.3 million. Now the film faces the nearly impossible task of becoming profitable. For that he would need, as Deadline calculates, around 250 million dollars.

The new film from the La La Land director is about Hollywood orgies

While Tarantino’s alternate history Once upon a Time in Hollywood was set in the late ’60s, Damien Chazelle jumps further back for his new film.

In the late 1920s, Babylon follows three people at different stages in their film careers: movie star Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), it girl Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) and assistant Manny Torres (Diego Calva) navigate the drug and sexual escapades of one dream factory that is about to undergo fundamental change.

When is Babylon coming to Germany with Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie?

Babylon starts already on January 19, 2023 in German cinemas. Then we can see for ourselves if the bad reviews are justified.
