Charlotte Baris: At La Loupe, we really like to lift the veil on some of the best-kept secrets of the Fifth Republic, whether it concerns the workings of power, the functioning of the French high administration or our intelligence services. And precisely, today we are interested in a particularly emblematic institution – you certainly know its name, especially if you have seen the series “The Bureau of Legends” – I of course want to talk about the General Directorate of External Security ( DGSE).

For most of us, how it works remains very mysterious. We talk very little about its operational successes or even the people who run it. But in recent days, you may have read or heard that a reshuffle at the head of the DGSE was underway. It might seem insignificant to you, one more change at the head of a relatively opaque administration. But in reality, it’s much more than that. The departure of Bernard Emié – its former director – is in fact the fall of one of the most important figures in the State. Some even say that he was one of the five most powerful individuals in the French state apparatus and he left an undeniable mark on our country’s foreign intelligence…

This story worthy of a spy novel, we said to ourselves that it deserved a double episode to tell the rise and fall from grace of a spymaster who was both discreet and flamboyant.
