On April 28, 2023, the extremely complex agent series Citadel started on Amazon Prime. Season 1 is set to be produced on a staggering budget of $300 million have devoured. Those who invest such sums are hoping for a big hit. Based on recent reports, Citadel has become just that.

As Variety reports, Citadel International is that second most successful original of the streamer. Only The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was able to attract more viewers. In a worldwide comparison, Citadel ranks fourth among the most viewed Amazon originals. This means that the extension for Season 2 is certain.

Citadel Season 2 is coming to Amazon Prime and Marvel creator Joe Russo is directing

Citadel Season 2 is definitely coming from one of the creative minds behind the last two Avengers films. According to Variety, Joe Russo will direct the new episodes – and single-handedly. That’s remarkable for one reason: He’s always done his big projects alongside his brother Anthony, including Avengers 3: Infinity War and Avengers 4: Endgame.

The Russos have been involved in several major projects in recent years. Both in the cinema and in streaming, they have left their footprint. Outside of their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they caused a stir with the $200 million Netflix blockbuster The Gray Man. In addition, they stand behind the very popular production company AGBO (Tyler Rake: Extraction).

Joe Russo directing Citadel Season 2 alone is an interesting move that begs a question: Is one of Hollywood’s most successful duos just breaking up? We’ve seen that happen many times in the past, from the Coens to Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. The Russos have at least one more common blockbuster in the pipeline: The Electric State.
