Apple: 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with SoC M2 expected to arrive this year

Apple 13 inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with SoC M2

During his event Peek Performance, Apple created a surprise by announcing its SoC M1 Ultra, but skipped the future SoC M2. The chip could, however, make its arrival later this year in MacBook Air (code name J413) and 13-inch MacBook Pro (code name J493) laptops, according to sources mentioned by our colleagues at 9TO5Mac. Note that the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo evokes for his part an update of the M1 chip for the MacBook Air.

The objective would be to replace the machines currently equipped with the SoC M1 and which date from November 2020. On the other hand, questions remain for the Mac mini, which should also benefit from the new SoC from Apple. For the moment, this machine is sold either in the M1 version or with an Intel Core i5 processor. The Intel configuration could give way to a Mac mini M2 Pro.

For the MacBook Air M2, Apple could offer a new design, but also… increase the price. On the other hand, there would be no exterior modification for the 13-inch MacBook Pro M2. Note that the current model has an M1 chip, but does not benefit from the SoC M1 Max, which is reserved for the 14-inch version.

The M2 processor, codenamed Staten, uses the SoC A15 architecture. It should feature 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores. Apple should then decline it in M2 Pro, Max and Ultra versions, if the manufacturer applies the same strategy as for the SoC M1.
