“An evil series”: Kevin Costner’s father was sure that the currently most successful US series would ruin his career

Yellowstone is a colossus and Kevin Costner stands on its shoulders. According to a report from 2022, the most successful US series (via Pennlive) about a rancher patriarch and his family led to a new era in the actor’s career. As Costner revealed to Parade in 2022, his father wasn’t a fan of the series to begin with:

[Mein Vater] said, “You’re going to lose your audience, boy. This is an evil series. They will turn away from you. Mark my words: She’s evil.”

Costner doesn’t reveal what exactly his father meant by that. Costner’s role profile, at least at the height of his popularity in the ’90s, was largely made up of good-natured, often fatherly figures. It’s possible the star’s father saw too much contrast in his Yellowstone role of a ruthless rancher.

However, the series is not entirely unproblematic for his son’s career at the moment. Despite enthusiastic fans, things got so bad between Kevin Costner and the showrunner that the epic will end after season 5.
