Holiday meals are an opportunity to drink alcohol, sometimes more than necessary. In this case, follow this expert’s advice to avoid a headache the next day.

Excess alcohol, mixed drinks, overly charged cocktails… The hangover is an uncomfortable feeling that occurs on the next day from a drunken evening. It’s nothing other thanalcohol poisoning : the organism, and especially the liveris no longer able to treat and eliminate too much alcohol ingested. “According to scientists, hangovers appear after drinking a dose greater than 1.5 g of alcohol/kg“, reports Sophie Hanania, naturopath.

THE typical symptoms of a hangover are a headacheas if “hairs were growing inside our skulls”, a pasty mouth, nausea and a feeling of weakness. Hangovers rarely last more than a day. If patience, hydration and rest are the best remedies, know that there is a very simple way to prevent hangover wake. “Obviously, moderate consumption of alcohol or even total abstinence remains the best prevention. But if we drink more than we should in the evening, alternate 2 glasses of water for 1 glass of alcohol to stay well hydrated (and remember to drink water especially before bed) because alcohol is a substance that dehydrates” advises our interlocutor as a priority. Before recommending:

  • do not stay on an empty stomach,
  • eat or at least snack on foods that are easy to digest (cooked vegetables, wholemeal bread, avocado, yogurt, banana, carrot)
  • favor highly mineralized waters such as Vichy©, Hépar© or Courmayeur© to make up for the loss of minerals.

On the other hand, avoid diuretic drinks like tea or coffeewho have tendency to dehydrate even more. As a reminder, in France, it is estimated 41,000 the number of deaths attributable to alcohol including 30,000 deaths among men and 11,000 among women. Alcohol can cause irreversible damage on the development of certain parts of the brain, maturing until the age of 25. Early introduction to alcohol increases the risk of dependence in adulthood.
