American influencer Kaylee said she hasn’t worn a bra for 5 years and going without one has “made her boobs look better”. So there’s no need for bras? We asked our experts.

Influencer Kaylee believes women would be better off by getting rid of this accessory. She even adds for her 182,000 subscribers: “your muscles will become strong and your breasts will support themselves“. So is the bra obligatory for the well-being of the chest?

With or without a bra: a story of ease, more than health

We interviewed Dr. Elizabeth Paganelli, gynecologist in August 2022. According to her, the question is based on a preconceived idea according to which the chest would be damaged without the support of underwear. “However, no study demonstrates over the long term, from puberty to old age, the benefit of wearing a bra on chest health, or the risk of not wearing one. she points. A study published in 2013 by Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon, sports doctor at the CHRU of Besançon would also have concluded that the bra is useless in supporting the chest, or even that the breasts feel better when they are not are not hindered.

Small downside of this study which was carried out on young women whose measurements we do not know, a reservation that the author himself recognized at the time: “This is a preliminary study on female volunteers who are not representative of the entire world population (…) it all depends on the structure of each person’s breasts (…) A 45-year-old woman who is overweight and with three kids have no interest in stopping wearing a bra“.

For Dr. Elizabeth Paganelli, “From a medical point of view, there are no contraindications. you can absolutely choose to wear or not wear a bra, whatever the size of your chest. The only parameter to take into account is to be comfortable with your decision, and in your body.”.

When should you continue to wear a bra?

No obligation, other than to feel good and not feel any discomfort according to the gynecologist: “Women with heavy breasts may be uncomfortable without support, even if there is no requirement for them to wear it.

Regarding sport, the same observation: studies do not demonstrate any risks to the skin, elasticity, etc. in the absence of underwear. “But the woman may prefer to feel supported in this case. Or prefer to wear a bra which is less disturbing than a bra” suggests the gynecologist, recalling however that simply wearing a t-shirt can cause irritation of the nipple when running, for example.

To wear or not to wear one, in the end, the decision is up to you. “There is no reason to force women to wear a bra if they feel good without it, and it is not reasonable to worry women who wear them with pleasure, comfort and daring.” concludes the gynecologist. In short, bra, bra, or nothing at all, do as you please!
