About ten Finns are in the middle of the war

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there is no way to get Finns out of the country now. Battles raged over the weekend.

The Sudanese army and the country’s paramilitary RSF clashed over the weekend in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.

The fighting is still going on, and the death toll is rising.

Consular Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jussi Tanner says that there are a dozen Finns in the country. All of them have been contacted.

Finns are mostly in Khartoum, where the fiercest battles take place. However, the war has spread across the country.

– The situation is truly serious and dangerous. Finns have to protect themselves, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends staying indoors, explains consul chief Jussi Tanner.

According to Tanner, one real danger is getting caught in the middle of the fighting. In addition, the armed forces are unruly, the most desperate tend to enter apartments.

– The real danger to life is not very far away, and we take this very seriously, he emphasizes.

The whole country is dangerous, and anywhere can flare up. The east is mostly under the control of the Sudanese armed forces. The RSF originates from the west, from Darfur.

The situation is still the same as at the weekend: it is impossible to leave Khartoum because the airspace is not available, it is closed, and the airports cannot be used.

Leaving the country is not possible either, says Tanner. Water, electricity and communications still work.

Tanner generally assesses that the military and paramilitary forces are fighting for power.

– Currently, the evacuation of Finns is impossible. It is also impossible to say when it might succeed.
