A fire broke out on the car ferry Stena Scandica in the early afternoon when the ship was near the Swedish island of Gotska Sandö. The island is located in the Baltic Sea north of Gotland.

There are about 300 people on the ship, whose route runs between Ventspils in Latvia and Nynäshamn in Sweden. The fire has not caused any injuries.

When the alarm about the fire came, seven ships and three helicopters were sent to the scene. For example, the MS Visby passenger ship traveling between Nynäshamn and Visby headed towards Stena Scandicaa (you switch to another service) to assist in rescue operations if necessary.

At first, it was estimated that there was no need to evacuate passengers from Stena Scandica, but in the evening the authorities announced that the evacuation had begun. The ship lost electricity as a result of the fire and is now drifting towards the shore. Therefore, everyone on board is moved to safety.
