The new law many homeowners missed – can result in a fine of SEK 3,000

At the turn of the year, a number of new laws came into force.

Lower taxes on work and pensions, tougher penalties for gun crimes and new rules for law enforcement are just a few examples.

Here you can read more about the new laws that came into force on 1 January 2024.

New law stops burning

A new EU law that was introduced at the turn of the year is the ban on fires in the garden.

After a long winter, it’s time to clean up the plot and collect leaves, rice and other garden waste, but burning it in a barrel is no longer allowed.

According to Milla Sundströmmanager at the waste and chemicals unit at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, there are many who missed the new law and during the spring many questions came in about what it is that applies.

You may no longer burn plant parts, grass clippings, leaves and branches that come from tending the garden. Stumps and woody waste in the form of, for example, branches and twigs are also included there.

What should be done with the garden waste instead?

– You must hand it in at the recycling center in your municipality or compost it on site if you have the space to do so, says Milla Sundström to News24.

The ban is controlled by the municipalities, and they are also the ones who can approve exceptions for burning.

– It could be someone who has a long way to the recycling centre, and it is not the most environmentally friendly thing to go there. But that’s an analysis that the municipality can do itself, says Sundström.

Anyone who breaks the rules can be fined or have to pay an environmental penalty fee, which is currently SEK 3,000. It is also up to each individual municipality to decide.
