Team has too few players at the start of the league – old coach (27) has to play against young super talent

In League of Legends, the US league LCS started last week after a delay due to a player strike. But the team “100 Thieves” was one player short. As a result, a coach had to put down the clipboard and grab the mouse and keyboard again.

This was the situation of 100 Thieves:

  • 100 Thieves have signed a midlane talent from Korean team Gen G. to replace Bjergsen: Quid (19). Gen G. has “Our Lord and Savior” Chovy in the mid lane and won’t need a replacement for years. But Quid had visa problems and therefore the 19-year-old was not in the USA when the league started.
  • Out of desperation, 100 Thieves brought in assistant coach Erlend “Nukeduck” Holm (27). The Norwegian had already ended his career in 2022, but he was a professional midlaner for a long time.
  • The problem: The opponent Flyquest had also recently bought in Korea and secured the 19-year-old South Korean VIcLa from KT Rolster. And he had his visa.
  • Could the 27-year-old coach really stand up to a young super talent from South Korea?

Coach wins flawlessly against young talent

How did that turn out? The old coach and his team wiped the bottom of the Rift with FlyQuest’s enemies. They actually had a “flawless” victory, like in Mortal Kombat. With 17-0-20 you finished off the opponents in 30 minutes.

Nukeduck played 1-0-5 on Ahri. His opponent, the 19-year-old from South Korea, played 0-3-0 with Jayce.

The other nominally strong players from FlyQuest, such as Impact, Spica or Vulcan, also did not see a country that day. Doublelift got the most kills for 100 Thieves – he is now 29, even 2 years older than Nukeduck.

How is this commented? Reddit is having a blast thinking about how Nukeduck coached himself before the game:

  • “Nukeduck changed strategy before the game to ‘Just don’t die’
  • “Let’s just win lol – Nukeduck”
  • “I don’t think anyone had ‘100 Thieves wins near perfect with Nukeduck vs Flyquest’ on their list of things happening this season”
  • “The Year of the Duck”
  • The 100 Thieves social team can’t get enough of Nukeduck either. Here people spontaneously call out “The week of the duck”.

Well, after years of thinking that LoL was “No Country for old men”, this seems to have been reversed in the last few weeks:

LoL: Team gets a discarded professional in an emergency – but the old man (26) can still do it
