Xbox Console companion app ending support

Microsoft has officially announced that support for the Xbox Console Companion app on Windows PCs will end soon.

New Xbox app, Xbox Console Companion appwill directly replace it. The Xbox Console Companion App was originally released in October 2014 and offered Xbox gamers access from their Xbox One console to their PC.

Xbox Console Companion app is terminating

After Microsoft discontinued the use of Xbox One SmartGlass in 2016, it made the Xbox app the main choice for connectivity between Xbox One and Windows PCs. This app allowed Xbox Live users to review and purchase Xbox One games, view achievements and game capture footage, and access Xbox Live community content.

In 2019, when Microsoft started preparing for an all new Xbox app that included PC Game Pass integration, the app was later rebranded as the Xbox Console Companion app. The Xbox Console Companion app is directing users to download the updated Xbox app, and it looks like Microsoft is preparing for the permanent shutdown of the companion app.

Introduction and features of the new Xbox app

The official Xbox Support page for the Xbox Console Companion app has been updated, revealing that the app will be retired on August 28. This means that the Xbox Console Companion app will no longer be available for download and the app’s official support will end completely.

Users attempting to access the Xbox Console Companion app after August 28 may encounter a sign-in issue due to the app’s servers being shut down.

Microsoft encourages users who enjoy the features of the companion app to download the new Xbox app and continue to engage with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S service and community content on Windows. Also, the website of the Xbox Console Companion app now redirects users to the Xbox app site where the new app can be downloaded.

The lack of a public announcement about the end-of-service date for the Xbox Console Companion app may disappoint Microsoft and users who have supported the app for almost eight years.

While the new Xbox app has some features missing from the Xbox Console Companion app, Microsoft will likely roll out various updates over time to improve the overall user experience. Some of the most requested features from the Xbox community for the new Xbox app are the direct download for game captures and the ability to connect multiple Xbox controllers at once.
