Wrestling girls about the new statue: “Dressed if it had been boys”

This weekend, a new statue was inaugurated in the roundabout at the intersection between Ladugårdsvägen/Vedbyvägen in Klippan.

It depicts two women wrestling, in itself not so unexpected in Klippan, which put wrestling on the sports map.

But there are divided opinions in society about the statue – the women have no clothes.

Not the guys

Åbygymnasiet in Klippan has a wrestling program. We went there to hear what the students, who are active wrestlers, think of the statue.

– The girls in the statue are naked. I don’t think the guys in a football statue would have been, says Elin Federley, one of the students we spoke to.

Want to pay tribute to wrestling

Elin Luckmann (VF, Vår framtid) sits on the cultural committee. She says that the politicians ordered the statue to pay tribute to the wrestling in Klippan. And she thinks it’s okay.

– For me, it’s just two women who wrestle in silhouette. I don’t immediately see that they are naked, she says.

Meet the students and Elin Luckmann in the video above.
