MUSIC FESTIVAL. Like every year, in France, the Fête de la Musique 2023 is celebrated on the first day of summer with hundreds of concerts.

[Mis à jour le 19 juin 2023 à 14h24] Like every year, the Fête de la Musique 2022 will take place on June 21, the first day of summer. In 2023, the event will therefore take place on a Wednesday evening. A date that was not chosen at random, since it corresponds to the summer solstice, the first day of the summer season, the end of spring, but also the longest day of the year. It’s a great way to celebrate music, the arrival of good weather and to start the summer evening season!

The Fête de la Musique takes place all over France, with dozens of events in the streets, bars, concert halls or city parks. Free concerts that delight music lovers, whether young or old.

Who invented the Fête de la Musique?

It was in 1981 that Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, initiated the creation of an event putting music in the spotlight. He instructed Maurice Fleuret, director of music and dance, to create this huge popular event, which would be organized every year, on the day of the summer solstice, everywhere in France. The first Fête de la Musique took place on June 21, 1982: it was a success. Thousands of events are springing up all over the country, bringing together music lovers and artists for a gigantic popular celebration.

“We needed an event that would make it possible to measure the place occupied by music in individual and collective life. A spectacular movement of awareness, a spontaneous momentum to alert public opinion and perhaps also… the political class. C This is why the Ministry of Culture had the idea of organizing a Fête de la Musique in 1982. A non-directive party, which brings together all French people for whom music matters. “, underlined in 1983 Maurice Fleuret in Télérama.

Also, very quickly, the Fête de la Musique, which took hold of France and the French, went beyond borders: since 2017, more than 120 countries have celebrated music on the same day.
