Now the medical treatment at the care center that the woman contacted is being criticized by the Inspectorate for Care and Care, Ivo. It reports The medical journal.
The young woman contacted the health center because she had a headache for a month. She also felt nauseous, had an “uncomfortable feeling” in her stomach and had vomited. As the doctor could not find any neurological symptoms, it was suspected that the problems were stress-related.
The woman also lost a lot of weight in a short time, and a month later was referred to a dietitian and for eating disorder treatment.
Was diagnosed after ten months
The woman herself suspected that the symptoms arose in connection with a tick bite she received during the summer, and that she contracted Lyme disease, the newspaper writes. Her requests for a Lyme test were ignored, according to the Ivo report.
Ten months later, the woman had developed balance and walking difficulties. She was then referred to an emergency department to investigate neurological disease. Then it turned out that she had suffered from neuroborreliosis, Lyme disease that spread to the nervous system, and she was treated with antibiotics and received rehabilitation.
Ivo now criticizes the care center’s handling of the case, and believes that they should have followed up the woman’s symptoms more continuously. Ivo also believes that the woman should have been referred to a specialist clinic for investigation at an earlier stage, reports Läkartidningen.
Two doctors who were in contact with the woman during the investigation have responded to the criticism and believe that a Lyme infection is complex to diagnose. According to them, in order for the diagnosis to be made, extensive investigations were required and that the woman was treated at the hospital for several days.
Can cause long-term problems
Lyme disease is spread by ticks and is a bacterial disease. Most people who are affected have mild symptoms and usually recover after receiving antibiotics.
However, the disease can spread further to the nervous system and joints. Then it takes longer to recover, according to 1177. When Lyme disease spreads to the nervous system, it is called neuroborreliosis, and symptoms such as headache, severe pain in the neck and back, and paralysis in part of the face can occur.
A Lyme infection can cause problems that remain for a long time, according to 1177.
